Yes and it's doing this via the magic_quotes_gpc setting which is currently set to 'on' within the server. Read about this setting here : http://www.php.net/manual/en/configuration.php#ini.magic-quotes-gpc As stated by Dave, you want stripslashes() before mailing and consequently, addslashes() adds them.
