ok, here's a scratch:
$contents = file ($file);
for($i=0; $i<sizeof($contents); $i++){
$staff .= eregi_replace("this", "with_this", $staff);
}
$fp = fopen ($file, "w");
$fputs ($staff);
fclose ($fp);
I think this should work ...
