The HTTP_IDENT env. variable was depreciated due to its limited use. REMOTE_USER does have a value if the user has been authenticated. If the authentication was successfull then the users name is stored in here. Use HTTP_REFERER if you want to know where the visitors were before they came to your site or a page on it.
