Getting LDAPS to work

I have got php 4.0.4p1 configured with openssl 0.9.6
and ldap and I'm trying to get an ldap_connect to work
over ldaps as described in the ldap_connect
documentation.
I have no problem connecting using
ldap_connect(hostname) format but I do have a problem
with the URL format. This is what I am doing :-
$Host='ldaps://hostname/';
$ds=ldap_connect($Host);
What is wrong ?? any ideas ??
