As the original poster mentioned, yes. However, ActiveX code can be
instantiated and run on the server. Why? Because ActiveX is just a sexier
name for COM (The Component Model Formerly Known As OLE, which itself was
formerly known as NetDDE) and is just an API that allows one chunk of code
to dynamically load and execute another. While ActiveX is more commonly
associated with code executed in IE, it's much more commonly used on the
server.
As an example any time an ASP programmer queries a database, they're
probably using ADO. ADO = ActiveX Data Objects. I believe you could perform
the same work using PHP on Win32 and the new PHP4 COM functions, although in
the case of ADO I doubt there's any reason to do so.
