encrypt and decrypt in standard PHP

As the PHP manual indicates, we can use Mcrypt to do the encrypt and decrypt work in PHP, but that
needs to download the encrypt module and recompile PHP. Is there any other way to encrypt and
decrypt the string in standard PHP4.0.4 without any extension module?
