I've, I guess, graduated to more complex PHP programs mainly through projects at work. I'd challenge myself to do EVERYTHING in PHP. I've created everything from large scale, targeted, mailing lists to search engines based on DMOZ with PHP - with great results. I suppose the best way to move on to "advanced features" is to challenge yourself and have a good understanding of programming concepts, UNIX, and the various protocols you work with.
