For the record, I don't think anyone's ever written a third of a million
lines of code and gotten it all right the first time. To put this in
perspective, AOL released over two dozen auto-installing patches to version
4.0 of its browser, Netscape has probably released a dozen minor updates
since 4.0, and Microsoft has made several dozen updates to Windows and its
components.
If you're that concerned about stability and security, I suggest waiting a
little bit after major versions come out. On a mission critical database
server, do you go out and install a major MySQL upgrade the day it comes
out? No. You wait until other people have tested it, and give TCX time to
fix any bugs that crop up. In the same way, you should hold back on new PHP
releases until they're more thoroughly tested if you don't want to risk the
possibility of bugs.
