Hi,
you can't close it :)
If the connection is persistent pg_close() instructions are ignored (this is also true for other persistent connections and their respective close() instructions).
You can do it in the shell sending USR1 to httpd (killall -USR1 httpd) or by restarting apache (apachectl graceful).
The above is true for apache, of course :)
