mysql_num_rows dos not work

Dear Sir/Madam
I am using PHP4.0.
I have a problem:
I do not know how can i get the number of rows in query result.
When i use mysql_num_rows($result) whic $result comes from a
mysql_db_query a Warning comes that say :
<<Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource>>
Can you help me how to use mysql functions to get correct results.
