Will my script run after redirect?

If I have code like:
if( $i == 0)
{
print "<meta http-equiv=refresh content=\"0;url=$url\">";
}
$i++;
I find that $i++ will run but I hope it don't, if I alter the code to:
if( $i == 0)
{
print "<meta http-equiv=refresh content=\"0;url=$url\">";
exit;
}
$i++;
Will it work? Is it have any side-effect?
