Silly me, I kept searching php.net and AIMS for "here document", and found nothing. I should have been looking for "here doc". Also, none of the documentation mentions the fact that there can be no white space after the first identifier. It is only specified for the closing identifier. I did have a trailing white space after the opening identifier. Removing it solved the problem.
