Unfortunately, you can't get a real, live, "this process is 50% complete"
progress bar out of such an update, for exactly the reason you mentioned:
The page is only going to render after after the web server sends it,
which won't happen until the mysql_query() function returns (or dies, or
whatever).
I did, however, see something vaguely similar on Photodisc's site: while
browsing for images, they load an image into the background which simply
says, "Loading". Then they drop a white layer on top of it and fill it
with whatever text is appropriate for the page. It's not a progress bar,
and it won't come down the pipe until after the query runs, but it might
be useful.
