Opening files via ftp and displaying connection stuff

Ok i know that i can open a file on an ftp server with the following command: fopen("ftp://user:pass@ftpserver.org/dir/file.file","r-"); (well all of that can be changed, but the idea is there. is there anyway that I can open a file from an ftp server and while connecting display the connection process? (like in ftp clients you can see all sorts of information, can you do the same in php?) Thanks Ed
