I wasn't able to get that to work for some reason.
I may try this approach if I can't get example that follows yours:
$new = str_replace(':',chr(0),$old);
to work.

People will do rediculous things, but you'd need a lot of monkeys in a
room with keyboards to get them to type in "ColonColonColonColon"

It isn't critical info, just an annoyance I want to remove.
