getimagesize

i'm having some odd problems with getimagesize.
sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
this is the code i'm calling it with:
$p_size = getimagesize($photos[$start]);
where $photos[$start] has the value im000301.jpg. the php file and the
image file are located in the same directory.
this does work however:
$p_size = getimagesize("im000301.jpg");
any clues?
