In what regex syntax? In POSIX (ereg_*) and in PCRE (preg_*):
[.] //match a period
\. //match a period
. //match one instance of any character (which could be a period)
[[.foo.]] //match string "foo" (in POSIX, anyway; I'm not sure about PCRE)
