I suggest to you searching the archives and columns or articles on PHPBuilder (www.phpbuilder.com)
or
PHPresourceindex (http://php.resourceindex.com/search/index.cgi) discussing the advantages and
disadvanteges of template based PHP programming.
In the Smarty docs the 1st chapter (overview) deals with the concepts of template.
It's worth reading it. BTW, Smarty is a very (most?) powerful PHP template-processor nowadays.
