sessions & php4

I am trying to use session_start(); in my scripts. I am basically just doing session_start(): to get a new $PHPSESSID. but when I use session_start(); I get this error: Fatal error: Failed to initialize session module in /var/htdocs/test.php on line 14 then when I remark out the session_start(); from the script, I am able to get a $PHPSESSID But it seems that if I don't use the session_start(); on the first try and get that error, I can't get the system to generate $PHPSESSID. my phpinfo file is @ www.digitalwebzone.com/phpinfo Thanks Ray
