sesson_destroy() never returns TRUE

I use session_destroy() to successfully destroy the session data but for
some reason it doesn't return TRUE.
Can anyone else get session_destroy() to return TRUE?

if(session_destroy()){
print "session, $id, destroyed";
}else{
print "unable to destroy session $id"; // always prints. even when the
session was destroyed successfully
}
