This just set off a ringer in my head. :-) Go back to your /usr/src/php* directory (or whever Solaris hides it) and dig through config.log and config.cache and whatnot to figure out if: Did PHP use the "built-in" MySQL library rather than the source headers for the MySQL you are actually running? If so, and it it's a different version from what you are actually running, then you'd see behaviour like this. MySQL sorta works, cuz some functions in the binary files are where/how PHP expects them, but a bunch aren't and they act all crazy. If all else fails, just do: ./config.nice and read the last 50 lines or so.
