using crypt function with PHP for NT

I am running PHP3 for NT and I am trying to use the crypt function but
it is not being recognized by php as a valid function. I tried it with
and without the dl call.
Any suggestions on how I can do this to work would be greaatly
appreciated.

$salt=3;
$data='newday';
$crypted=crypt( '$data','$salt');
print $crypted;
