I don't see 3 times pr page as a lot. I'm in the process of writing a
tool for viewing articles, and I'm user it uses mysql_query around 10
times pr page you view, and I still haven't noticed it being any slower
than viewing static pages.
If you do use mysql_query() a lot, I suggest that you use
mysql_pconnect() to make your connection as this will make the
connection time to the database faster.
