On those same lines you could check this URL

They have two products that esentially use this process
but they take the pinged geographic area infomation for the router
and use it as a map point showing you the real world geographic
path of the ping. The first program is Neotrace which lets you enter
the target ip/hostname the second is hacktracer which is a firewall
which auto pings and maps the geographic location of Dork Knobs(sm)
who port scan your system.
