Well, an error code of 1 implies that your process doesn't have permission to do whatever it is you're trying to do. The only other thing I can think of is that someone on this list recently had problems with sendmail and I think it boiled down to adding the -t option to the sendmail command. I've only tested the mail() function once just for fun and it worked without any reconfiguring by me so I'm not going to be able to help you very much. Sorry.
