Well,
<form action="<?php echo $PHP_SELF; ?>" method="get">
always works fine for me.
Note that you should use "action" instead of "target", and the semicolon
after $PHP_SELF should be inside the ?> not outside of it... might be one of
these two errors causing the problem (although I can't think why)
