PHP Standalone scripting?

I was wondering if there's a way to run php scripts
on a standalone basis, as you would run a PERL script
or C program? I would like to use PHP since I have
written a lot of code that could be re-used to write
some simple scripts that can run from cron or from a shell
to do some database maintenance, send e-mails, etc.
If not, are there any plans to build a standalone run-time
interpreter for PHP?
