Andrew,
This will work, no doubt about it. But I think I forgot to mention that I am
doing a project for someone who has a hosting service that has the short
tags property "on" in their php.ini file. They have to have it on for those
who don't like writing their php code in the form of <?php ... ?>. I checked
it with phpinfo() and confirmed it to be as such. Is there any other way
around this without going through the php.ini file?

In your php.ini you should find;
; Allow the <? tag. Otherwise, only <?php and <script> tags are recognized.
short_open_tag = On
Set it to Off and see how you go.
