undefining variables

Hi everyone,
I need to log a user out after $PHP_AUTH_USER/$PHP_AUTH_PW
authentication, however sending 401 header will not do...
Effectively I just need to set $PHP_AUTH_USER to null, but can't seem
to find a method of doing so.
Is there anyway to make a variable undefined?
