using ttf with gd/freetype

Is there a file-conversion required to use MS ttf as sources for
freetype/gd?
Or am I missing something else?
System is chucking on this:
imagettftext( $im, 10, 0, 20, 160, $color, "VERDANDA.TTF", "hello, world!");
imagegif($im);
The ttf file is in the same directory.
