I don't know what your projects are for, but the Zip code databases can be found for < $400 -- $150 per year, if I remember correctly, which included monthly updates and such. I was using it for a mileage tracking system. Put in two zips, and calculate lat/long points, get as-crow-flies mileage. The database also had Cities and States, so this database could be used for other things, too. It wasn't the USPS, though, which IMHO makes it better. Any time you cut the fed out of the picture, quality improves. If anyone wants to know who was selling this, I can probably look in my old notes. It was a legit company. Email me off-list.
