Simulating ASP's "application" scope would have to go a bit beyond simply using shared memory, because ASP can have multiple 'application scopes' running under one machine, each with variables of the same name. You'd need to build something to map your specific application's name space to specific areas of shared memory, being careful not to step on other areas.
This could probably be simulated better with a db table, although the overhead might be a bit higher. It'd definitely be more scaleable than shared memory tho.
