PHP on Debian with PDFlib

I'm using Debian unstable with the php4 packages. I need PDFlib support,
however, but this is not in the Debian packages (not free).
How do I go about this? Do I just remove all PHP related Debian packages from
the system, and compile from source? Is there any other way to integrate
PDFlib support? Has anyone else ever done this before?
On the same note, is it possible to get PHP running as both CGI and Apache
module with the Debian packages (for running PHP scripts in crontabs, on the
cli, etc...), or do I need to compile from source for this aswell?
