Metabase with ODBC error message

Hi,
Does anyone know why metabase, when using ODBC, would produce an error
message like:
Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in metabase_odbc.php
on line 264
The line in question looks like this:
if(!odbc_fetch_into($result,$this->current_row[$result_value]+2+$first,$this
->results[$result_value][$this->current_row[$result_value]+1]))
It appears as though this is something that you cannot legally do, or can
PHP be compiled with some special options to allow this?
