I've been using Pro Hosters for a little while and am extremely happy.
Great prices; SSH, telnet, FTP access; they keep PHP version up to date;
MySQL; Perl; easy to install other stuff; lots of POP boxes; you can do your
own DNS and MX if you want; and the "virtual hosting" setup is hosted on a
huge FreeBSD cluster which is cool. There are various other cool aspects.
Check out http://www.prohosters.com.
Also, one of the best things is that they have support available via
IRC/chat. And, they are super responsive, both to chat, and to regular
support requests. Every time I've hopped onto IRC (I tend to use my own IRC
client, but if you go to their site, you can use their web interface), one
of their people has initiated the chat within usually about 10 seconds.
I've really never had better support.
Finally, one thing I really liked about these guys as compared to some
others, is that you can setup multiple domains under a single
setup/account/login. I have about 5 domains all simply separated by top
level directories in my account. This makes managing multiple web sites and
such way easier (e.g. Hurricane Electric by comparison, requires you to have
a separate account for each domain - which also means you're paying the min
fee per domain, unlike Pro Hosters where you simply pay for the bandwidth
used in total across all your use/domains).
