system() is leaving hung processes.

I use a system call to get some data from another program. I figured out
that if you "Refresh" your browser while a system() is still executing, the
particular process is left running or orphaned (aka. <defunct>).
The orphaned process is show once of the httpd process as its parent.
Anyone know how to prevent this from happening. I would like the system
command to be killed by apache if possile.
