Setting Up Secure Pages with PHP

Hi, I'm pretty new at PHP & I was just wondering if anyone had some information about how to set up a secure area on my site. I don't need anything really intense to protect data, just something that allows only priveleged users into that portion of the site. If anyone has any links or info on how I can learn how to do this, I would really appreciate it.
