php4 segfault on apache startup

hey, I just built php-4.0.0 as an apache apxs DSO and now when I startup
apache it does it's initialization stuff then forks off the daemon proccess,
the problem is that this daemon process is then segfaulting. of course if
I remove the php4 module this doesn't happen.
any ideas on what is going wrong? any ways to debug this witout recompiling
apache?
