speed, sockect are AFAIK faster than normal mail().

nope does not require extra things and it should work on both
platforms. I do not know if all isp's carry it or if it's normal to
include it.

a mailer that uses
sockets.
http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net - a wrapper with
more features also,
with this one you can use both mail() or SMTP so you can do a little
speed testing.
