Installing Apache, mySql and php

I installed Apache, mySql and php from the redhat installation disk when
it first installed the operating system.
Apache and MySql are working fine but php isn't.
Checked the httpd.conf file and found this info:
LoadModule php4_module modules/libphp4.so
That file is there. The web root is var/www/html
So the question is, when I put a .php file there, why doesn't it run?
Why does it return the page as code?
All help and explanations would be much appreciated.
