You're definitely asking for trouble if you use pointers... Did you
ever write CGIs in C/C++ before discovering PHP? :)
Just use reference variables. However, in every site I've done, I've
never found any need for handling VERY large sets of data in memory...
For the small amounts of data PHP scripts most often handle, an access
time of (or near) O(n) is perfectly acceptible. The overhead is usually
database access/bandwidth, not the script (notice I said -usually).
Going from page to page with a browser would require recreating that
data structure every time, which seems like it would be a real pain. If
you were using PHP as a shell scripting language or doing backend tasks,
and you must handle large enough amounts of data to warrant using lists,
trees, heaps, etc. then my analysis may be completely wrong.
For a language that rarely sees pages with large execution times, using
multidimensional associative arrays seems much more practical, since all
the handling functions are built in.

Subject: [PHP] pointers
Will there ever be a pointer data type in future releases of PHP?
Something
like C/C++ pointers?
It would be nice to have chained elements (structures) to build trees,
and
chained lists.
Saludos... :-)

Porqué usar una base de datos relacional cualquiera,
si podés usar PostgreSQL?
