Because Apache-1.3 is not multi-threaded connection pooling can't be done
at the Apache level. It would require some other standalone connection
pooling scheme completely separate from either PHP or Apache.
Some people have talked about working on something like this, but it would
be a project unrelated to PHP. Extremely useful to PHP users of course,
but not PHP specific in any way. Anything would be able to make use of
it.
I'd be interested to hear why you need connection pooling for a MySQL
environment though. Connection pooling is always going to be slower than
having dedicated connections, and MySQL connections are very
lightweight. And it certainly isn't because of a license issue. Often
this request come up because people have a DB license that only allows
them to open 20 concurrent connections, for example. Or it comes up
because each connection is extremely heavy and they don't have the server
resources for them.
