GD support

I just don't get this ...
I've tried to install GD-1.8.3 so I can get GD support on my PHP-3.0.16
Yes - I've installed libtool, jpeg-6b, libpng and zlib - and GD install's
fine.
But - when I'm configuring PHP I set --with-gd, and it says :
checking whether to include GD support... no
I've even tried to put --with-gd=/usr/local/include
and --with-gd=/usr/local/include/gd
Nothing works ...
What am I doing wrong ??
