Or, to actually prove your point in the original e-mail (I checked it and
you're right):

function echotest()
{
echo("Testing");
}
$test="echotest";
?>
If you now try <? $test; ?> it won't do anything -- as you said, <? $test();
?> is the proper code.
Something worth mentioning is that even if you do <? $test="echotest()"; ?>
the former version won't work.
