Your question intrigued me enough to start searching for an answer. Never did this myself, but you may try http://download.php.net/manual/en/html/function.fopen.html (fifth paragrapgh of explanations). Hope it works with Apache - I was unable to determine if this only works when you run PHP scripts from the prompt. Please let me know if it works!
