How long can the session ID be?

Hi - How long can the session ID be? Infinitely long? It seems to always be 32 characters on my system, but it looks like it's built from the PID and the time and some other stuff which can change... so I'm assuming it can too... Can I safely assume it won't get larger than say 64 characters? Thanks! -philip
