Too many open files!

Warning: fopen("./messages/77.txt","r") - Too many open files
That's my error. It's in a long search algorithm, however I'm pretty sure I
close each file when I'm done with it.
>$openfile = fopen( "./messages/$file", "r" );
>
>blah blah blah code

>fclose( $openfile );
But that is in a loop... even though the files are being closed, does it
still keep them in some sort of buffer that's filling up?
I don't really know what to do about this. If I posted the code, would that
help?
