Using LDAP connection to MS Exchange?

Hi folks, I'm trying to rig up a connection here between a PHP script and an MS Exchange server's LDAP service to provide a phone list webpage that allows you to search for someone instead of loading the entire page every time. It seems that it can connect ok, but when I use ldap_search() I get the response back "Unable to perform the search: Protocol error". Looking around a bit has turned up this query: http://www.phpbuilder.com/forum/archives/2/2001/8/1/148854 ... which seems to have failed to attract a response of any kind. It looks like it's the exact problem I'm facing here. Does anyone know how to disable SASL authentication at the point of connection to the Exchange server? Is it something that can be done in PHP code, or will it require a recompile of something? And if so... what? Or, is there a way to work around this on the Exchange server?
