You don't... ;-)
More secure ways of doing this are HTTP Authentication and/or Sessions. If
you're running PHP as a module under Apache then you can use PHP to
authenticate against a variety of sources including a database - for more

If you're also planning to carry a large number of variables from page to
page as the user browses the site then I suggest looking into using Sessions
- it'll make your life a lot easier. For more info:
