preg_replace()&str_replace() escaping a double-quote problem

Any idea why when I print the value of $text, I get a backslash in front of
the result.
Any of the following:
$text=preg_replace("/\"/", """, $text);
$text=preg_replace("/\"/", "A", $text);
str_replace() also does the same :(
